7 Tips to Dress Up a Home for Fall

It’s that glorious time of year again: the days are getting shorter, the leaves are changing colors, pumpkin spice is back on the shelves, and it’s 85 degrees in LA. Heatwave aside, the whole nation is ramping up for the new season and bidding farewell to summer.

With the changing season comes a variety of new decor options to fit the shifting design trends as well as our changing lifestyles.

It can be difficult, navigating the home decor and art sections at your favorite shops, to distinguish between what you absolutely need and what you can afford to pass on.

When dealing with any seasonal redecorating, it’s key to keep a few things in mind:

  • What purpose does the room serve? Will certain changes hinder your day-to-day routine or throw things off-kilter in your home?
  • Are there any changes you’re not willing to commit to? Are you up for anything, or is paint completely out of the question?
  • What are your goals for the room? Craving the sleek editorial look of a glossy magazine or are you eyeing the perfectly-lived-in Pin you shared last week?
  • Do you have any pieces you can reuse? Anything unique and unexpected that you can pull out to match with your other decor pieces? Or, maybe, something you’re willing to repurpose?
  • And finally, everyone’s favorite: what’s your budget?

These may all seem like really obvious questions, but, in the excitement of redecorating, have you truly stopped to consider them?

The answers to all these questions can really shape your seasonal revamp for better or worse—it could mean the difference between a full-scale makeover and an afternoon of bargain shopping and thrift store DIYs. Whatever your answers are, here are some tried-and-true ways you can breathe new life and make your space nice and cozy for the upcoming fall and winter season!

Add textiles

Textiles are an easy and inexpensive way to transition your room from one season to the next.
They add a variety of textures and different patterns, all the while providing a pleasurable tactile experience for both the hands and eyes.

Adding textiles can make your room look and feel extra cozy, giving it a lived-in touch that’s hard to replicate.

Textiles can range from anything like a rug to a wall tapestry—the choices are endless.
Experiment with a variety of textures by bringing them in from other rooms before committing to a purchase, or consider using VR technology to visualize the pieces you want before ordering them (don’t you just love the future!?). Either way, plenty of textiles will last you clear through the winter and are an absolute must-have this season.

Swap out florals for preserved varietals or potpourri

As summer draws to a close, the birds fly south, and the leaves turn from green to brilliant shades of red and orange, so too do the flowers begin to disappear.

Although fall has traditionally been a time of harvest, it is also uniquely situated between summer and winter. Being so, autumn marks a time when flowers and trees halt their regular growth. Even the perennial varieties of some blooms and trees lay dormant for the fall season.

Not only does this make fresh flowers less readily available but also incredibly expensive, with no guarantee of either quality or of having them mesh with your existing decor.

Instead of fussing with fresh flowers, consider swapping them out for preserved ones or even with some fresh potpourri for an extra-festive option. Dried flowers and herbs are easy enough to come by, but you can make a project out of finding and preserving your own by hanging them upside down somewhere to dry or by using a preserving kit, and you’ll have your own, custom, bouquet in no time!

Rearrange the room

Moving things around is a simple but effective solution.

You’d be surprised at what a difference rearranging the room and bringing in pieces from other rooms can make.

Even moving a bed or couch to the other side of the room can totally transform the look and feel of a room and free up more space to play with.

Take a moment to evaluate your home: are there pieces of furniture that can go into storage, or that you can temporarily move to fit your vision? Don’t be afraid to call up a friend to help with moving things around. If you have the patience, you can try drawing up a “game plan” before you even lift a finger and sketch out ideas of how the room might look when you’re finished.

Preplanning is key when moving around furniture and decor pieces—especially ones that’ll leave you feeling achy and sore the morning after.

Layer up

You read that right! Layering isn’t just for your wardrobe: autumn is a great time to experiment with layering pieces over top one another to luxuriant and comfy effect.

Textiles are an obvious choice for layering. They lend themselves easily to stacking, and doing so takes up so little space.

Laying different rugs and blankets on top of one another is easy enough to do: just pick a few you like, and that you think would go together nicely, and rest them somewhere within the room.

For added, layered fun, consider layering your wall art and table-top decor for an unexpected take on this particular trend. Although this may take a little more pre-planning and work to achieve, it’s sure to be far more visually striking than the expected throw or rug.

Switch out your wall art

Not willing to fork out extra cash for themed decor or clutter? Wall art and canvas prints are a great option to switch things up for the season.

Fine Art Canvas makes it easy to hang and switch out your canvas art, so easy, in fact, that you can do it yourself!

Before you dive head-first into our shop, take a few steps to prepare.

Start off by developing your own fall-themed color palette and look for pieces that match. Have an idea of what you’re looking for, already? Search through our website via category and sub-category, and refine your results by color or canvas shape to prune hits and get to exactly what you’re looking for.

Play with texture

Texture remains a difficult concept to grasp in the design and decor world. Texture is anything that provides a contrasting “feeling” to a space, either literal or figurative, so long as it goes against the grain of the original design.

To play upon the fall vibes of your space, throw some blankets and a fun accent pillow or two over your bed or couch, invest in some woven baskets, or consider bringing in a couple of pumpkins.

Repurpose old decor pieces with a little DIY

When all else fails, look to the past for inspiration. What could be cozier than well-loved heirloom pieces or thrift store finds?

If something doesn’t quite fit your style, try repurposing it by painting or remodeling it, or even by using it in inventive and unexpected ways. Many pieces won’t even need any finessing to fit into your existing designs: A fresh coat of paint or decoupage can make all the difference—just remember to keep your changes manageable and within budget.

Fall redecorating can be daunting, but with a clear vision and the right tools you can easily come up with a game plan to see you through. The key to doing it right for your space lies in taking your own unique style into consideration and thinking of ways to creatively incorporate what makes your space truly “yours” while also playing with the season’s newest trends and themes. Remember: room decor and redecorating should be a fun and liberating activity that helps you create your dream space. Use the new season as an excuse to experiment and play with new concepts and ideas and to continue to refine your style.
